After almost 10 years of service as President and CEO of Girls Incorporated, Joyce M. Roche' is retiring. Bridgette Heller, Chair of the Board of Directors of Girls Incorporated is announcing her replacement, Judy Vredenburgh.

Let's talk about change!

When a group of Women of the 21st Century gets together, watch out!. Things will be "shaken not stirred" that's for sure. At the most recent reception, several members expressed dismay that their work schedules did not allow them to participate in the Friday lunch events. So here's an alternative schedule that was agree as a trial to see if more members could be accomodated.

Lunch in Alameda (Angela's Bistro) - January 8, 2010 and March 12th

Brunch in Alameda (TBD) - November 8th, February 7, 2010

Lunch in San Francisco (Town Hall) - November 20th, February 19, 2010

ANNUAL HOLIDAY SALE

The Annual Holiday sale is coming for the Girls. Time to check around your house for little things in great shape that you can donate. The date has not been set yet but they are now collecting donations. .

This event is always great fun for the boys and girls from Alameda Island Kids and Girls Inc. There is always a lot of effort and planning that goes into the event. Think about volunteering.

The Holiday sale is an annual special service that we provide for all of our families. The items that are collected are priced for the sale, with no items being more than $1.00. On the evening of the event the girls and boys come to Meyers Center on Santa Clara Ave, and spend up to $3.00 on up to 10 items. Once the boys and girls have completed their shopping they then go into the wrapping room. Volunteers are needed to assist the children in selecting and wrapping their purchases. If you can't come the night of the event there are many different opportunities for you to support the Holiday Sale. Items need to be priced, the morning of the event wrappting paper needs to be cut in different sizes, the wrapping rooms need to be setup, and the gifts separated into shopping categories.

Thank you to all who participated in the various events over the past month.

A great time was had by the 20 or so members who convened for cocktails at the home of Christina Ellwood's. The was lots of networking and meeting of new members. We also spent some time talking about ways to help the organization grow. If you have some ideas please send them to women21century@gmail.com

O Spa was a fine Club event in a wonderful venue with generous O Spa staff, including owner Lori Olson who was available to discuss spa sservices and healthy skin care products. We had about 30 guests including City Council member Marie Gilmore & Julie's Coffee & Tea Garden owner Julie Baron, an entrepreneur who recently was honored by Girls Inc's Women Who Dare. Lots of new people came as friends or invitees of Club. There was great food and drink, a must at Club events. Great gift drawings with spa products and Spa services were generously contributed by O Spa. Karen, Christina and Dorie spoke about Girls Inc. and Club. A beautiful necklace gifted by local jewelry maker Linda Castellani netted an additional $100 donation. Comments included "we should have more events a such nice places as O Spa".

Past Happenings

A great time was had by the 12 or so women who attended the get together at member Christina Ellwood’s home on Sunday, September 13th. Lots of great food, drink, conversation. We took the opportunity to have an open discussion on what the members would like to see from the organization. If you have any ideas please send them to women21century@gmail.com .

Two Bay Area celebrity sportswomen will be co-hosting this event to benefit Girls Inc. of The Island City.

Books Inc book signing featuring Jane Angelich who will sign, speak, and field questions about her new book, “What's a Mother (in-Law) to Do? 5 Essential Steps to Building a Loving Relationship with Your Son's New Wife.
Jane is a member of the Board of MarketingZone, a business-to-business web-based company headquartered in Portland, Oregon. She is the mother of two sons, ages 33 and 26 and a newly minted grandmother. This second book, What’s a Mother (In-Law) to Do? 5 Essential Steps to Building a Loving Relationship with Your Son’s New Wife, was released by Simon & Schuster in June 2009, www.inlawexpert.com. The first opportunity is this Thursday 8/6 at Books Inc. on Park Street in Alameda. Lynn will talk about her book "Se Habla Dinero: The Everyday Guide to Financial Success"; answer questions from the audience; and sign books after the event. Books Inc. will donate 20% of the sales between the hours of 6pm and 9pm (even if you phone in your order) to Girls Inc. of the Island City. Lynn will speak at 7pm.

The second opportunity is on Monday 8/10 when she'll present to the community an important program for families of Middle and High school children:

Program Description:

Important Information from the Executive Director of Girls Inc of the Island City

Dear WCC Members,

You may know that the Alameda Unified School District is proposing to add a component to the Caring Schools Community curriculum that provides teachers with lessons and tools for talking about LGBT individuals. Our Board voted unanimously to support the inclusion of this component. Marilyn and I crafted the following letter which will appear in the local papers, was sent to the Board of Education (BOE) members, and will be read at the upcoming May 12 BOE meeting. I am also a member of the CARE steering committee, a group who is working to support the school district's laudable plan.

Dear Editor,
Organizations like Girls Inc. exist because stereotypes and gender discrimination toward girls and women are still present in society. Bullying among, and toward, girls and women in schools and the workplace still occurs all too often. Intentional curriculum addressing this form of harassment is critical to creating safe environments for girls in educational, social and afterschool settings.
The same is true for LGBT individuals. LGBT students frequently endure uninformed, hurtful and often hateful messages. The scars that result from this type of ignorant and cruel behavior are not always visible but are most certainly felt by the innocent victim. The deconstruction of harmful words and actions is critical to ensuring that LGBT students are mentally and physically safe. Adding specific curriculum that teaches children respect for LGBT individuals is essential to maintaining safe school environments where all students can thrive. As we protect and educate all of our students, we help young people grow into productive contributing members of society.
We strongly support the addition of the LGBT component to the Caring Schools Community curriculum as an important first step in addressing the needs of all groups in our community.

Welcome to the Women of the 21st Century premier blog. We look forward to collaborating with all club members through this blog. Scheduled updates will be blasted monthly. Interim updates will occur if there is news we just can’t wait to share with you.

There are lots of fun events planned and we will use this to keep you in the loop. Lynn Davis will be the moderator of the blog and facilitating updates from guest bloggers. Guest bloggers will be the members of the Steering Committee, organizers of events, Karen Kenney on Girls Inc., and Dorie Behrstock on National. We will be interviewing mentors, mentees and interns. Stay Tuned.

On Sunday April 19 a group of 13 members joined together for brunch at Angela's Restaurant and a tour of the restored Art Deco Alameda Theatre and Cineplex. http://www.alamedatheatres.com/ We were very lucky to have tour guide, historical docent, ticket taker and chief popcorn sweeper, John Varney share his vast knowledge of the theatre. It is obviously a passion of his to give these tours. He was terrific
